The Planets

Everyone has had a great time on our afternoons studying the solar system.  Benjamin is doing a little experiment with an egg in the picture below.  It was so simple, but clearly demonstrated how the earth not only spins, but also rotates around the sun.

Benjamin

Here is Benjamin displaying his usual zeal for anything and everything.  He has had a great time over the last few months creating “masterpieces”, here he is showing us some of them.

China

benjmap.jpgDuring September and October we all studied China.  We learned all about the famous Yangste River, the millions of people who have never heard the gospel, James Hudson Taylor, Mount Everest and to add to the experience we had a Chinese meal, ate it with chopsticks and decorated the kitchen with lanterns, not forgetting the “moon cakes”.  One of the most fun projects was probably making a map of China out of salt dough and painting it.

chinatea.jpg  We even managed to try some Green Tea, but that didn’t go down so well as the Chinese Stir fry!

This september we had a fresh start with our home education, or rather we backtracked up a wrong turn and finally went down the right road, the one we had started on before we got entangled in workbook drudgery.  Here is a sprinkling of what we have been up to.

Happy Birthday Monet

Well, it isn’t actually Monet’s birthday today, it was yesterday.  Nonetheless today our art was centred on Monet’s style of painting (which is actually my favourite).  It took a while to explain how the Impressionists made their beautful paintings – with dabbings, splodges and smudges, but the boys produced some really good paintings.  I think they surprised themselves at how well their little masterpiece turned out.
